Jennifer John, Chairwoman.
Secretary, Inturserve Ltd.
Contact: jennifer.john@cbanetwork.org.uk

Hello I'm Jennifer.

The CBA was formed approx. ten years ago to give help and support for all local businesses.I have been a member for nine years which during this time I have held various positions. These include Committee Member, Secretary for three years, term as Vice Chair and now Chair.

The biggest project for the CBA has always been Carnoustie Business Directory. It is a well used book use by all businesses and householders. It takes a lot of hard work to produce and the lastest edition is due to be delivered shortly.

This year we have also been working on a new look website. All paid up members will be included on this site. There is no charge for this as it is included in your £25 membership fee.

The last two years we have had a competition for the best dressed Christmas Window. This has proved very popular.

I have seen the CBA go through good times and bad. I can say at this moment all is good. We have a very strong and dedicated committee and I am very proud of what they have achieved this year.

I am the Company Secretary of Inturserve International Ltd, Inturserve provides independent inspection, maintenance and consultancy services to operators of industrial gas turbines around the world.

The company was formed in 1996, initially operating from home, then through an expansion which required a move to a suite of offices above the Royal Bank on the High Street. Currently based in Ferrier Street , Inturserve is ISO9001:2000 approved and has a number of Blue Chip clients on its books.

Our range of services range from periodic video endoscope inspections, through installation, commissioning & troubleshooting, to being commissioned to write a complete gas turbine overhaul manual.

Kathleen Crowe, Secretary.
Co Owner, Links To Scotland.
Contact: kathleen.crowe@cbanetwork.org.uk

Hi I’m Kathleen. I have the pleasure of being Secretary to the Carnoustie Business Association.

However my real job is co running our successful Golf and Leisure Wear Company. I am usually to be found at LINKS to SCOTLAND in the heart of the Carnoustie High Street.

We opened the shop some seven years ago and we have gone from strength to strength. Links to Scotland pride ourselves on giving service and value. Approximately 90% of our products are designed in house and manufactured in this country. A fact we are understandably very proud of. As a result of marketing our LINKS to SCOTLAND brand in several countries and through our successful web site we now have a huge customer base. Many of whom have visited Carnoustie and have thoroughly enjoyed the hospitality shown by everyone they meet in the town. But it has to be said that without the support of our local customers, Links to Scotland would have never survived in Carnoustie.

In small towns such as ours, we need the patronage, support, friendship and encouragement of local people and fellow businesses alike.

I would love to see the growth of small businesses in the town. The development of an Industrial area, with affordable units encouraging new businesses, bringing more employment in to Carnoustie. Businesses working together to their mutual benefit.

The Carnoustie Business Association look forward to producing a comprehensive Business Directory and a Web site to show case what Carnoustie has to offer.

Richard Kerr, Treasuer.
Proprietor, Carnoustie Golf Creations.
Contact: richard.kerr@cbanetwork.org.uk

My name is Richard Kerr and I am currently Treasurer of the Business Association in Carnoustie.

Although I have only lived in Carnoustie for the last 16 years I have strong personal connections to the Town going back over 40+ years and indeed have family connections going back to the early part of the last century.

The business I run is called Carnoustie Golf Creations which I operate with my wife Esther, from our home.

The business has two sides to it.
Firstly we produce handcrafted hardwood golfing gifts and in particular display boards, clocks and shields for golfers who collect golf ball markers from the different courses they play.

The boards are quite unique and come with an engraved plate which for example could say- 'Been There - Played It - Got the Marker'.
All the boards can be made to the customers own specification and can be produced in different types of wood to suit the decor of where they are displayed.

The second part of the business is the supply of trophies, medals and awards for the sport and leisure industry. We also provide an engraving service and can supply personal items in Crystal, Pewter, Silver and Glass for Birthdays, Christenings and Weddings etc, which can of course be engraved to suit the occasion.

Hilary Wallace, Committee Member.
Partner, Wallace Veterinary Centre

.

Jim and I started the Wallace Veterinary Centre in Carnoustie in August 2004.  Although Jim is an accomplished vet, we were both new to owning and running our own business.  Although we knew of the CBA's existence back then, we did not realise what a help they could have been to us.  That would be my aim - to make the CBA more accessible to both people starting off and those already established.  There are always new regulations that need to be tackled - some we may not even be aware of.  It is good to have a forum to discuss any problems or successes.  There is always someone there for a discussion.  I would say that the CBA has come a long way even in those 3 years and I hope that more of you will join us at meetings and take advantage of any information that may be gleaned, be it from Health and Safety Issues to Banking to Advertising to the Best Place for a Pint!!

Peter Burke, Committee Member.
Proprietor, Carnousite Fobel Shop.
Contact: peter.burke@cbanetwork.org.uk

Those of you who've been into the Fobel Shop (and I suspect that's most of the population) will have realised 'Ahm no frae Carnoustie'. However, my wife is from Dundee and we moved up here to Carnoustie just a couple of years ago to be near her extended family.

Having spent a lifetime (sometimes it seems more) in marketing for IT and Telecommunications companies down in the south, buying the Fobel Shop from Alistair and Margaret Thom in 2006 was the best thing I ever did. I'm able to use all my accumulated knowledge of DIY, and marketing, to provide a really complete and personal service to all the folks in Carnoustie - and beyond, since it's the only real hardware and DIY store between Dundee and Arbroath.

As well as retail customers I've got around 50 local trade account customers who have preferential terms, and many of whom have their business cards displayed in the shop. So if you're a Carnoustie tradesman or businessman, I can offer you a great little shop to pick all those odds and ends so you don't have to go into Dundee to finish a job, as well as good credit terms, a place to advertise, and some friendly banter thrown in free of charge. If you're a local retailer, you'll be pleased to know that as a matter of policy, I always refer customers to other local shops if Fobel doesn't have the item they want. So I need to know who you are, and what services and products you offer!

75% of my stock purchases are from Scottish suppliers, and I've been able to employ two staff, Chris and Fiona, both of whom live in Carnoustie.

I am also the vice-chair of the newly formed Carnoustie Allotments Association, and as such act as the thorn in the side of Angus Council…

Gary Miller, Committee Member.
Proprietor, The Floor Studio.
Contact: gary.miller@cbanetwork.org.uk

My name is Gary Miller and I currently run two businesses side-by-side ‘Keen Kleen' and ‘The Floor Studio'. I started keen kleen, my carpet & upholstery cleaning business in March of 1999 and run this successfully on my own until we introduced the wood floor sanding service four years ago. Following on from there I opened The Floor Studio in Queen Street and more recently moved into our new premises on Dundee Street all of which have been supported very well by the local Carnoustie People.

I joined the Carnoustie Business Association two years ago and my main aims are to provide an excellent up-to-date business directory, en-sure that all shop outlets are filled and most importantly that the local people don't look past their local shops and businesses of which supply excellent services on your doorstep.

Michael Smart, Committee Member.
Proprietor, Strictly Streetwear.
Contact: michael.smart@cbanetwork.org.uk

My name is Michael Smart and I am a committee member for the Carnoustie Business Association. I am an optimistic man and envisage that through the addition of the website that I formed and maintain on behalf of the group, the Carnoustie Business Association can now offer a more modern and diverse way forward. I would like to see the Carnoustie Business Association website offer support to all existing members and all future potential new members in areas such as networking, sourcing, news and events, current affairs, a forum for chat and socialising etc. Idealistically the Carnoustie Business Association would in turn see more unison between the businesses of Carnoustie and the surrounding area's.

I have resided in Carnoustie for 26 years and am proprietor of Strictly Streetwear which I started at the beginning of 2005. First and foremost I am a retailer of designer clothing offering genuine garments that are 100% Authentic, sourced only from reputable companies based in the UK and Europe . My main clientele are in and around Carnoustie, although my business is mainly web based. I have recently branched out into Ladies High Fashion and Quality Gold and Silver Jewellery and am looking to move forward into marketing and expanding my progressive company.

Melanie, Committee Member.

Hi, I'm Melanie,

I have just recently joined the CBA council, as a committee member. I'm really excited about the prospect of helping support and hopefully seeing growth of local business. I see such potential for Carnoustie to be not just a good place to live, but a great place.

I moved, with my 3 cats, from Portland , Oregon to Carnoustie in September 2003. It took me a while to acclimate to a new country, living in a small rural community and a new language! My "old" life was living in a big city, working night shift as a R.N. in a neonatal intensive care unit. I met Alex, who is a long time resident of Carnoustie, while he was working in Portland as a Quanity Surveyor.

Alex and I took over the Pet and Garden Centre in May of this year. This is a completely new venture for us, as we have not run a business before. It has been exciting, sometimes a bit scary, and a steep learning curve. We still have a way to go before I think we will feel completely comfortable with owning a business, but we are trying our very best to provide a good service to the people who live here.

I have to say that this is turning into the best job I have ever had.  I have more fun, even when I'm feeling "stressed out". The shop is an amazingly social place and we have some absolutely wonderful customers- pets and human alike. I am truly grateful for the support and acceptance we have received from all of them.

I hope to see in the future, of expanding the scope of the Pet and Garden Centre. Alex and I have a big interest in wild birds, and are currently starting to expand the wild bird feeding aspect, with a view to include other garden wildlife items. I am also working on seeing the pet section of the business broadening. Along with this, continuing to provide a range of gardening supplies.

Along with the CBA, I am now involved with the Carnoustie Centre Action Group and about to join the Alloment Association. I am also a member of the RSPB, including the local Dundee group, Angus Dundee Bird Group, Dundee Naturalist Society, SWT, NTS, and if that isn't enough, I also do volunteer work for C.A.R.R.O.T. in Arbroath, a rabbit rescue and re-homing organization.

Alex and I live in Carnoustie with our 3 cats, 2 cockatiels (the boys from the shop), a lovebird, a buzzard, a bunny and a mouse. We have 3 resident budgies, Pretty Boy, Sunny and Bingo who live in the shop.
